Driving in China - What to Expect
Before you set off to China intent on driving beware, the traffic conditions in China are worse than those in most western countries. Here are some tips:
 • The Chinese drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left, all vehicles abide by this but not military vehicles (blue or white), they are exempt from all road conditions and can travel in any direction and o not have to obey traffic signals.
• Chinese cars do not stop for pedestrians; they are more likely to honk their horn and swerve to avoid them.
• One of the biggest problems in China is insurance, most vehicles on the road will be uninsured.
• Speed limits vary depending on where you are driving and few abide by them, but in the few areas where there is speed enforcement then being caught will cost you up to CNY 2000.
• Roads are not that well maintained in China, even in the cities, so be prepared to find open manholes and cracks as you drive.
• You are allowed to make a left turn even if there is an oncoming vehicle. But be warned as the oncoming vehicle will not stop and is not required to do so.
Visitors can get a temporary licence to drive in China for not more than three months and the potential holder must attend a study session in Chinese road laws before it is issued. However holders of an International Drivers Licence can drive in China at anytime but must convert their licence into a Chinese one. This can be done easily enough in cities like Hong Kong and Beijing.
Most accidents in China are met with the following response, everyone just drives on. If both parties do, or have to, stop then an agreement can normally be met with some money changing hands.
Be wary of large imported luxury cars, these are usually being driven by gang members or the younger members of an official party member or government official; these tend to consider themselves to be above the law.
If you are unlucky enough to get involved in a confrontation with the police make sure you tell them you are aware of the Tourist Complaint Board and the Ministry of Supervision (which deals with corrupt practice). You`ll normally find your complaint being resolved peacefully.
